Roles and Responsibilities 

Under the supervision of the Operations Manager, the Optical Finishing Service team leader plans the work teams’ activities, transmits information and monitors work quality. They guarantee the client quality production and provide feedback to their supplier (internal or external). The team leader is the link between the planning/leadership departments and their team. They are responsible for dealing with any problems that arise and taking the necessary steps to prevent them. In addition, the team leader performs various machining and 5-axis numerical control programming work, mostly related to optical surface machining. Finally, the team leader works closely with other departments to develop new processes and products.


  • Advise colleagues and solve technical issues;
  • Develop computer tools to facilitate assembly, improve precision or make new machining processes feasible;
  • Analyze machining results and find ways to improve quality and/or reduce process time according to the needs of internal customers;
  • Work closely with other departments to develop new processes and products;
  • Document the knowledge acquired and complete the requested reports;
  • Design complex and diverse optical surfaces that are programmed in Catia;
  • Analyze the quality of the surfaces provided by the client and/or the other departments;
  • Manage the material resources;
  • Coordinate production activities;
  • Provide coaching and vocational training;
  • Give the team objectives and monitor results;
  • Generate the CNC programs necessary for machining the parts from a 3D file and according to the requirements using Catia, Work NC, Simoptic and other software;
  • Check the programs with Vericut and/or other specialized programs directly on the machine;
  • Choose the appropriate machining method for the type of part;
  • Ensure that all manufactured parts meet the standard methodologies and requirements in place within the unit and the needs of internal customers;
  • Adjust the different programming and machine parameters to obtain quality parts;
  • Complete machining assemblies on CNC machines;
  • Create high precision Diamond cutting machining assemblies;
  • Control and adjust machining to meet the quality criteria;
  • Advise the Procedures Officers on how to prepare the parts before optical machining, if necessary;
  • Suggest ideas for improvements;
  • In collaboration with the manufacturer, solve machine-related problems, if necessary;
  • Help clean the machines and monitor the inventory of special blades;
  • Perform any other tasks required for this position.

Knowledge, education and experience

  • Have a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering;
  • Be a member of the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (asset);
  • Have a minimum of three (3) to five (5) years of experience in a similar position;
  • Have a good general knowledge of computer applications, including the use of the Microsoft Office Suite;
  • Have a good background with 3D CAD-CAM software, CATIA (an asset);
  • Experience in machining and programming (essential);
  • Knowledge of the plastic industry (an asset);
  • Mastery of the use of conventional tools: milling machine, grinding machine, lathe, drill, saw, press, etc. (an asset);
  • Bilingual (French and English), both oral and written.
