Medical Technician

Medical Technicians spend most of their careers working directly with the Forces within Canada, on ships at sea, and deployed on international missions. They usually work in shifts and, occasionally, on call.

Medical Technicians work with Medical Officers and Nursing Officers to treat the sick and injured in all kinds of Forces’ operations and units.

A Medical Technician has the following primary duties:

• Provide initial care for patients

• In trauma cases, provide basic life support treatments

• Prescribe some medications in accordance with their scope of practice

• Provide medical support during environmental operations

• Recover casualties from the point of injury and transport them to a medical facility by wheeled or tracked ambulance, or by air

• Participate in rescues from crashed vehicles, tanks, ships, aircraft and damaged buildings

• Give basic advice on disease prevention, hygiene and sanitation

• Perform specific environmental health and preventive medicine duties

• Collect specimens and perform basic laboratory procedures

• Operate and maintain medical and life-support equipment

• Perform electrocardiograms and audiograms

• Initiate, maintain and distribute medical records, documents, reports and returns

• Maintain, replenish and account for general and medical supplies

Generally, the number of hours of work per week is 40 hours. However, military members can be called to work on atypical schedules according to the operational needs. This job also exists on a part-time basis with the Reserve Force, usually evenings and weekends.

Salary : 35 800$ to 98 300$ per year*

* The minimum wage mentioned above is the first year of service. The military member will earn a base salary of approximately $ 60,200 after approximately four years of service. The salary increases according to the rank and experience of the member according to the rates of pay applicable on April 1st, 2017. To know more about the rates of pay:

You can apply for this position if you meet at least these conditions:

• To be aged between 16 and 54 years old

• To be a Canadian citizen

• To have completed the requirements for a high school doploma in Canada; OR Have completed a diplôme d’études professionnelles (DEP); OR Have obtained a certificate of equivalence at the secondary level (AENS-TENS); OR Have acquired General Educational Development (GED)

• To have completed at least Math 426 (TS4 or SN4), Secondary III (ST3) or Secondary V (ST5) and Secondary V Chemistry

• To have a valid driver’s licence.
